The vision of the Himalaya Archive Japan (HAJ) is to create the future that humanity can harmonize with nature and to live in peace with each other through the message from the ecosystem and profound spiritual culture in “the Himalayas”. HAJ pursues the following objectives in order to realize this vision.

* Contribution to improvement of nature, society
(people) and environment of the Himalaya
The issue of glacier meltdown caused by global climate change has only recently been reported by Japanese media. However, its details have not been fully reported. Not only glacier meltdown we should pay attention to, but also precious ecosystem and traditional cultures of the Himalayas endangered by rapid economic development. The Himalaya Archive Japan (HAJ) plans to graphically document and cover such issues together with ICIMOD (The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development) and local specialists and journalists. HAJ also plans to actively cover and report global common issues of the region such as ethnicity/human rights including the Tibetan issue, empowerment of women and poverty.
*Provision of wide range of information regarding the Himalayan region
“The Himalayas” is a treasure of the Earth. Indeed it is “the Wonder Land” filled with interesting stories of the Mother Nature, Cultures, Religions, Ethnicity and so on. Directors in the world including Asian have been capturing the diversity of “the Himalayas” through own unique perspective. The Himalaya Archive Japan (HAJ) gathers their best films for the Himalaya Film Festiva. In Tokyo the Himalaya Film Festival is currently organized biennially. But it will be organized every year in the future and increase films per festival. HAJ will organize workshops in collaboration with other NGO and NPOs, and use own graphic document collected through our research.
*Provision of support for improvement of production environment of independent Himalayas (Asian) video picture directors
Rapid spread of high-performance small video cameras and personal computers with the picture editing feature has made it easier for anyone to produce films than ever before. However, the production environment of the Himalayas (Asia) countries is not yet sufficient. For documentary and film production featuring the theme of a problem (environment, human rights etc.) tabooed in society, directors face difficulty in the fund-raising, the sanctions from society and state power and so on. Furthermore, it is currently very difficult for them to secure a place to screen their films. The Himalaya Archive Japan (HAJ) will provide followings to Asian directors dedicating to improve their communities: Financial Support / Opportunity to screen their films
- We strive to respect and reconcile different race, ethnic groups and cultures
- We will pursue nothing but truth and will not regard any issue as a taboo
- We will increase HAJ’s usability through partnership with other organizations, corporations and communities.
-We will consider cost-effectiveness in our operation, and use our membership fee, donation and grant in accordance with our accountability policy.
