中国の天安門で人民解放軍により民主化を求める多数の市民（学生・労働者）が虐殺された「天安門事件」から、今日で早３０年。英国の外交機密文書によれば、殺害された人数は少なくとも１万人に上るという。その事件の２年前の１９８７年、大学生の私は中国・チベットを一人旅したのだが、様々な体験を通じて共産党の腐敗・非道を実感させられた。特に、偶然知り合った漢民族の鉄道員の苦境を訴える話に深く心を打たれた。「日本の人々に、中国独裁体制の惨状を伝えてください」。その民主化運動は私にとって全く当然の帰結だった。テレビに映し出された人々の希望に輝く笑顔がその鉄道員の顔と重なった。しかし、それも長くは続かなかった・・・天安門は血の海となった。
中国政府はこの事件を「政治的な騒乱であり、中央政府は騒乱を収束するために対応した。正しい方針だ」とし、軍による民主化運動の武力鎮圧を、国際社会からの非難など全く顧みず、未だに正当化し続けている。その事件は完全にタブー視されていて、関係者は当局の監視下に置かれ、事件関連の情報・言論統制は徹底されている。中国のネットでは天安門事件の関連情報は厳格な検閲の対象になっており、結果、その事件の存在すら知らない中国の若者たちが多数存在するという。都合の悪いものは歴史から葬り去るー独裁政権の典型的な性質だ。
現在の中国国防相は「この30年間で中国は大きく変わった。天安門事件に当時の政府があのように対応したからこそ、中国は安定と発展を享受している」との主張している。だが、その社会の実態を元学生リーダーの一人は喝破する。
「今、中国人は豚のような生き方をしている。目の前に食べ物があれば、それを食べ、腹一杯にさえなれば、あとは何も考えない。１９８９年以前は、思想を持ち考えるべきだと、みんな思っていたのに・・・」
当局による少数民族（ウイグル、チベット族）への圧政（人権蹂躙）も益々巧妙、激化している。習近平をトップとする共産党政権の「エゴ」の肥大化はとどまる所を知らないようだ。「私たちチベット人同様、中国人の多くは民主化を望んでいます。中国が民主化されれば、日本を含む近隣諸国も大きな恩恵を受けるでしょう。『チベット問題』の解決も中国の民主化の延長線上にあるのです」。以前（1999年）、ダライ・ラマにインタビューした際の言葉だ。
「天安門事件」から３０年経った今、中国を民主化させる意義を改めて考えてみたい。中国の人々が最も誇り高く輝いた「あの時」を風化させてはならない。 ________________________________________________________________________________________
